Will my insurance cover damages to my rental car?

Are you taking a trip this summer?  Will you be renting a car?  What can your auto insurance do for you when you rent a car?  When you are renting a car on of the questions you always get is who has your auto insurance?  The next question is do you want to buy the insurance on your rental?  Do you need to buy the rental insurance?  The answer depends on what you are comfortable paying out of pocket.  Typically when you rent a car the liability from your auto policy covers that portion of a potential claim.  The physical damage portion of the claim is where things change.  In most cases your insurance will cover the physical damage to the rental car.  You will however be subjected to your deductible just as you would if you wrecked your personal car.  The rental car insurance would in most cases allow you to not have a deductible for a physical damage claim.  In the end the decision would come down to if you would rather pay the rental in case of  an accident vs paying your deductible on your auto insurance.  Keep in mind the insurance will not pay the bill for you to rent a car.  The rental car coverage on your insurance policy is only able to be used in the event of a comprehensive or collision insurance claim situation.
