Thanksgiving Day is a time to spend with family, it can also be a day for home insurance claims.  In other words a holiday of celebration can turn into a day of fires, falls, and even food poisoning.  All of these events could lead to a home insurance claim.  Do not be too afraid though, we will try and help point out some of the potential danger areas for Thanksgiving Day.  Hopefully, with a little planning your turkey day can go off without an insurance claim.

Unfortunately, your turkey could be the biggest risk.

Thanksgiving Day see’s a 250% increase in fires per day typically having around 1600 fires according to NFPA.  Most of these fires are caused by unattended cooking.  Leaving flammable items to close to cooking surfaces is a major contributor to these fires.  While cooking remember to never leave your cooking unattended.  Oven and stove tops are not the only area for potential home insurance claims.

Deep frying your turkey can lead to a home fire.  Again, according to NFPA, deep fryer fires cause five deaths, 60 injuries, destroy around 900 homes and cause a whopping 15 million in property damage.  Avoiding a deep frying home insurance claim can be done.  For instance, never leaving the fryer unattended.  The fryer should be set up on a flat surface away from the house, deck, and never in the garage.  In addition, make sure that the turkey is completely thawed.  Finally, monitor the temperature closely.  Overheating oil can catch fire.

What other factors could cause a Thanksgiving Day home insurance claim?

Cooking the turkey isn’t the only place that the turkey can lead to a home insurance claim.  Food poisoning can be the caused by bacteria.  This bacteria can happen when stuffing is not cook thoroughly.  Stuffing should be cooked prior to placing it in the turkey.  For cooking the turkey, make sure the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.  A food thermometer in the thickest part of the turkey should do the trick.
