Spring time heavy rains can expose home insurance vulnerabilities.

By May 6, 2022Insurance

Spring time can bring heavy rains, these heavy rains can expose vulnerabilities in your home insurance.  Home insurance covers a variety of perils, one peril however, that isn’t covered is flood.  In the case of your home insurance flood has a wide spread definition.  When most people think about a flood the think about rushing water engulfing your home.  This isn’t always the case for flood claims.  Flood for your insurance purposes also includes surface water.

What is surface water?

Surface water is what you have whenever heavy runs leave water laying in areas.  Surface water from a heavy rain is typically denied by your homeowners insurance.  In other words, the only way to get a surface water claim covered would be to have flood policy.  If water comes in through you walls or a basement window, again that is probably not covered.  This is why Spring preventative maintenance can be crucial to protecting your home.  However, help looks to be on the way.  A few of our companies are working on water endorsements that would help close this home insurance issue.  Stay tuned to this blog for more info when this product becomes available.  It will be a great way to make sure that heavy Spring rains do not cause you a home insurance claim.
