How can a child going off to college affect your auto insurance and other insurances?

By July 15, 2022Insurance

How can your child going off to college affect your auto and other insurances?  There are a couple of ways.  One way, is having a child away at college.  This child can impact your auto insurance premiums.  Is that child away at school without a car?  This could generate a discount for your auto insurance.  If your child is taking a car to school, will it be driven less than its current usage?  Again, this could generate a discount on your auto insurance.

Should I do anything with my home insurance?

A child away at school could affect your home insurance as well.  One thing you may want to consider is a renters insurance policy for your child.  Renters insurance could give you another layer of protection for liability issues that could come up with a child away at school.  A renters insurance policy can also keep your home insurance claim free if your child has a claim on their belongings.  The place that your child rents may require a renters insurance policy.

Any other insurance affected by my college bound child?

One thing you may also want to consider is life insurance.  If you are a co-signer on your childs loan, you could be responsible for their loans in the event of them passing.  At a young age, life insurance is typically very affordable for this.  A life insurance policy could also give you a discount on your home and auto insurance.
