Does your homeowners insurance properly cover your engagement ring?

By February 23, 2022Insurance

Did you get engaged for for Valentine’s Day?  Are you sure that your homeowners insurance properly covers your engagement ring?  Jewelry will typically fall under personal property on your homeowners insurance, however, there is usually a per piece limit.  Also, if you use the personal property part of your policy for jewelry you could be missing out on coverages for things like mysterious disappearance.  You may want to consider scheduling that engagement ring on your homeowners insurance.  You can also get an inland marine policy to cover your ring.

What is the advantage of scheduling my engagement ring on my homeowners insurance?

The big advantage of scheduling your engagement ring is that it receives broader coverage.  One, coverage is part of a whole.  This provides coverage for the ring if a diamond were to fall out of the ring.  A second advantage is you can select a specific deductible.  You may have a $1000 deductible on your homeowners insurance.  If you schedule your ring you could have a zero deductible for the ring.  Finally the value of the ring matters.  Your homeowners may have a limit per piece of jewelry.  An example would be a $1500 or $2500 max per piece amount.  In that situation the 1500 or 2500 would be the max you would receive in a loss.  Scheduling that engagement ring on your homeowners could get you the full amount.

What do I need to schedule my ring?

First thing you need is possibly an appraisal.  For instance, if a ring has a value of 7500 it may need an appraisal before being insured.  After that you can give us a call.  We need the full description of the ring from the bill of sale or the appraisal.   In other words, we need the size, cut, and clarity of the diamonds.  We can then decide if you want a zero deductible or a higher deductible.  In a lot of situations you do see a zero deductible.  Losing an engagement ring is terrible, having an associated cost with that loss is even worse.
