Heating your home in Winter affects you and possibly your home insurance.  November brings cold weather, heating, and winter your home and possibly home insurance.  There are many ways to heat your home from your fire place to your heater.  Different forms of heat bring different risk to you or your home insurance.  For instance your fire place can heat an area quickly, but it can also cause a potential fire.  Your heating system can be safer for your home insurance, but it can lead to carbon monoxide.

Using fire heat in your home

Using fire heat in your home can be cost effective, however it can lead to a potential fire.  First off always make sure that your fire place area is clear of any flammables.  Next, check to make sure the flue or damper is open.  After that you could clean out the ashes to have better air flow.  According to www.healthychildren.org, using well aged and dry wood will help cut down on smoke.  Smaller pieces of wood will also help cut down on smoke.  In addition always keep an eye on the fire.  As with an flames never leave your fireplace unattended.  Similarly never leave children alone with a fire.  Keep tools for the fire out of reach of small children.  Also keep children away from any glass or metal that can become extremely hot.  Before you do any of this, it is a good idea to have a professional inspect and/or clean your fireplace.

What about my furnace?

First off if you have any thoughts that your furnace may be under performing have a professional take a look.  It is also a good idea to have carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home along with smoke detectors.  In addition to things a professional can do, there are things you can do yourself.  One easy thing to do is check and your air filter.  Clogged air filers can lead to carbon monoxide in your home.  Another potential cause of carbon monoxide is your pilot light.  It is a good idea to periodically check your pilot light.  If you store items in the same area as your furnace follow a few safety tips.  Similarly to your fire place store items away from you furnace.  Also be careful when moving items stored near the furnace so you do not bump any wires or seals.  Finally, remember to never store flammables in the same area as your furnace.
