Extreme cold temperatures can lead to a pipe burst and higher insurance premiums.

During the cold winter months, a pipe bursting becomes a big deal.  A burst pipe can cause huge amounts of damage and be a huge inconvenience for anyone.  Your home insurance will most likely cover the damage caused by the burst but not cover the replacement of the actual pipe.  A pipe burst can occur when it is very cold outside and the pipes contract.  If there is a weak spot in the pipe then the pipe can burst.  This typically happens at a temperature of 20 degrees Fahrenheit and below outside.  The pipes most at risk are the ones that are in unheated interior spaces, areas such as the basement, garage, or attic.  Preventing a pipe burst can be very cost effective.  A simple fix like pipe insulation can cost around 50 cents per linear foot.  Other tips you can use to prevent freezing pipes are simple things like leaving your garage door closed, opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors (especially the ones on the exterior of the house), and letting water drip from the faucet.  A little trickle of water can be enough to keep the pipes from freezing.  If the temperatures outside are below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, remember to keep your thermostat the same both day and night.  Keep the temperature at a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit, even if you are away.  If you are looking for a more intensive prevention method adding insulation in your attic, basement and crawl spaces can help with preventing a burst pipe.  Preventing a pipe burst can save you money by not having a costly claim on your home insurance.
