Deep fried turkey anyone?

Do your Thanksgiving plans involve deep frying a turkey?  A deep fried turkey can add great flavor and variety to your Thanksgiving Day meal.  It can also cause some safety issues for you and your home.  The first thing you want to do is be prepared, have a fire extinguisher nearby and do the deep frying away from the house.  Your fryer should be on flat ground so that the oil is evenly distributed and will not spill out.  When you fill the fryer make sure not to overfill the fryer.  You could place the turkey in the fryer with water and mark the level, just we sure to completely dry the fryer before putting in oil.  Leave 2 feet between the tank and the burner on a propane fryer if possible.  Make sure that the turkey is completely thawed and free from water.  Water can cause the oil to rapidly boil and over flow, if the fryer overflows onto the flame then a fire can start.  When you start to immerse the turkey in oil remember to lower it slowly, dropping it to quickly can cause it to splash possibly burning you or starting a fire.  While deep frying remember that hot oil can cause burns.  Wear proper safety attire like googles, gloves and an apron.  While the turkey is cooking use a thermometer to make sure the oil stays at the correct temperature and to insure the turkey is cooked to the proper temperature.   Oil that is too hot can catch fire.  As with other Thanksgiving Day cooking do not leave cooking unattended.  Once finished remove the pot from the burner and place it on a level surface and let cool overnight before disposing of the oil.  We hope you have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving.
