Thanksgiving day home insurance claims can be a big problem.

By November 22, 2021Insurance

Thanksgiving day is well know for home insurance claims.  According to NFPA’s 2020 Home Cooking Fires report, Thanksgiving day is the number 1 day for home cooking fires in the US.  In 2018 Thanksgiving Day yielded 1630 firefighter response calls vs the next highest day which was 470 on Christmas Day.  This is 250% percent over the average day and results in around $7000 in damages.  Home fires are however, not the only threat to your home or auto insurance on Thanksgiving day.

If I watch my cooking am I good?

Thanksgiving day can pose other risk for your home insurance.  Typically, Thanksgiving day has your home seeing an increased amount of visitors.  Make sure that your home is ready.  Check handrails and stairs to make sure they are secure and free of clutter.  It is also a good idea to check all walking areas especially outside.  Are these areas free of slip and fall hazards?  Is the outside free of slippery surfaces?  Have loose rugs been secured?  Does salt need to put down outside to keep areas free of ice?  Slip and fall hazards are not the only danger to your home insurance on Thanksgiving day.  For instance, your pets can cause a Thanksgiving day home insurance claim.  More people than normal in the house can stress out your animals.  In addition to having an animal bite a guest, a guest could trip over your pet.

Your home insurance isn’t the only insurance that could be affected?

Auto insurance can also have a claim on Thanksgiving day.  In addition to home claims, auto claims can be more prevalent than normal on Thanksgiving day.  Thanksgiving is a big travel day.  According to Triple A, 53.4 million people are expected to travel during the Thanksgiving holiday.  Therefore you auto exposure is higher than it has been the last couple of years.  However, remember that of that 53.4 million, 48. are estimated to be on the roads.  In other words, give yourself plenty of time.  Similarly, try to travel at non-peak times to avoid too many cars being on the road.

In conclusion, we hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving.
