Spring is the perfect time for a home insurance review.

By May 13, 2022Insurance

Spring time is the perfect time of year for a home insurance review.  Why, because Spring can be the season the exposes gaps in your home insurance.  Spring time can bring storms, these storms can leave you with a potential uncovered claim if you do not know your home insurance policy.  Last week we discussed how surface water would not be covered by your home insurance.  This week we will discuss coverages that you can add to your home insurance policy.

What is sewer and drain back up?

First up is sewer and drain back up coverage.  Sewer and drain back up  coverage can be added by endorsement to your home insurance.  This coverage is in place to cover the damage caused if a sewer or drain backs up.  It will not cover damage to the pipe but it will cover the damage caused by the back up.  Typically, you will see this coverage added when someone has a finished basement.  You could also use this coverage if  you store a lot of items in your basement or around a drain.  There are exceptions to this coverage so make sure you check your policy or check with your agent.  Remember that there can be a different deductible for this coverage.  Sewer and drain back up can be a great discussion point for a Spring review of your home insurance.

Is there coverage available for the pipes leading to my house?

Another topic for your Spring insurance review of your home insurance is underground service line coverage.  This coverage is for the pipes and lines that lead from the road to your house that you are responsible for that are underground.  You could have coverage currently for these lines through your utility company.  A homeowners policy is another place you could pick up coverage, if you decide to add this coverage.  Claims that occur under this policy tend to be pricey.  Adding this coverage to your home insurance could save you a lot of money in repairs in the event of a claim.  This coverage can cover a lot of events that damage your pipes, just remember that this coverage will come into play if the pipe is damaged not for preventative measures.  Also, be sure to check your policy to make sure there are no surprises in the policy language.
