Last week we looked at how a little fall maintenance on your gutters (see here) could save you from a homeowners insurance claim. This week we will look at some other things you can do to save yourself from a home insurance claim. One big area to look at for fall maintenance is your roof health. A leaky roof can cause big winter problems. Inspect the roof from top to bottom for cupping or loose shingles. Look at the metal flashing for damages around vents and chimneys. If anything needs a closer look consider a roofing contractor to take a closer look.
My roof is good, am I done?
Though not necessary a fall maintenance issue that could lead to a homeowners claim, sealing up air leaks can save you money. According to energy.gov sealing up drafts could save you up to 20% on your heating bills. To check windows, close a window with a sheet of paper being closed in it. If the paper moves freely new weather stripping could help. A lighted candle can be used to check doors and windows also. Just be careful with the flame. Also, check windows for damaged or missing caulking.
While you are outside check walkways.
Putting checking walkways and your driveway on your fall maintenance list can prevent a slip and fall claim on your homeowners insurance. Any cracks that are more than 1/8 an inch should be addressed. Also, look for uneven sections or loose railings.
