Your homeowners insurance loves fire prevention week.  According to the Redcross (www.redcross.orgg), you may have as little as two minutes to escape a home fire.  Therefore it is important to have quick notification.  Smoke alarms for instance can be a life saving device.  Place smoke alarms on every level of the house.  Focus on placement being inside bedrooms and sleeping areas.  After that, make sure you test them each month.  In addition, Redcross says you should have a fire escape plan.  This escape plan is to be practice twice a year.

Colder weather is coming.  Colder weather means heating your home.  In other words an increased risk for fire and your homeowner’s insurance.  Before turning on your heat have your system inspected by a professional.  When your heat is on be mindful of things near the heaters.  Keep flammable materials a minimum of three feet away.  Also remember to turn off space heaters and portable heaters when you leave a room.

Similarly this is the time of year for candles.  Candles can be another risk of fire and a homeowners insurance claim.  Candles should be kept in there approved containers or placed in sturdy fire resistant holders.  FEMA (https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/fief/open_flames_and_fire_safety.pdf) suggest keeping candles at least 12 inches away from anything flammable.  Never leave candles burning unattended.  Keep candles out of little ones reach as well.  Another candle hazard can be pets.  Pets on occasion can knock over candles.  Worse yet that can catch themselves on fire on rare occasion.
