Flaming holiday decorations are a way to ruin your holidays and have a home insurance claim.  According to www.contractlaboratory.com, around 94 million homes display some type of Christmas decorations.  Out of that 94 million, nearly 13 million in damage is caused by a fire related to a decoration.  In other words, your holiday spirit can lead to a fire.  However, all is not lost.  There are ways to help prevent a holiday fire.  NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has some tips to help you stay fire free.

How can I lower my risk for fires?

Fireplaces, radiators, heat vents and candles can ignite decorations, therefore keep decorations three feet away.  In addition keep exits clear of trees and anything that could block access.  When picking a live tree, select one that is green with hard to pull needles.  After that, make sure that you water the tree.  A dry tree is more flammable than a properly cared for one.  Check lights to make sue that they have been tested and rated for outdoor use if they are being used outside.  Wherever you are using the lights, check lights to make sure they have been tested and are fire resistant.  Finally remember to turn off lights when you are leaving or going to bed.

Can I just connect my lights for my tree?

Electrical fires can happen at any time of year.  The holiday season can be even more dangerous if you are not careful.  When using lights outside, make sure that the lights as well as any extension cords are rated for outdoor use. In addition, do not put nails or staples through the cords when hanging.  Again, double check the lights to make sure they are independently tested and approved.  Replace any string of lights that have worn or broken cords.  Also do not connect more than three strands of lights together.  Finally, be careful of how many items you have plugged into an outlet.  Do not overload outlets with too many electrical items.

In conclusion.
