Will Halloween be a spooky time for your home insurance?

By October 12, 2021Insurance

Will Halloween be a spooky time for your home insurance?  It can be.  Halloween night is an exciting time for children and adults, however it can lead to a home insurance claim.  There are some things you can do to help you avoid a home insurance claim during Halloween season.  Below we will touch on some ways to protect yourself and your home.

What you can see during the day, you might not be able to see at night.

For most communities trick or treating takes place at night.  Furthermore the month of October can be a month where it gets darker earlier than the prior months.  When you are prepping your home for trick or treaters make sure you do a safety check as your home would appear at night.  Walk your property to see if there are hazards that may not be visible at night and cause a trip and fall.  Look for extension cords or decorations that may not be visible at night.  After that check walk ways to make sure that they are free of debris and any holes, exposed roots or uneven surfaces.  If you are using a fog machine or dry ice make sure that this does not obstruct walk ways.

The inside of your home could also lead to a Halloween claim.

Halloween night can be spooky for your home insurance on the inside of your house as well.  Typically Halloween night is not a good night for your fur friends.  Loud noises, doorbells, and increased people at your home can spook your animals.  Having people in the home can result on a potential dog bite.  If you are hosting a haunted house or other event check with us to make sure that all your insurance needs are covered.

Watch your decorations and make sure they are safe.

Spooky Halloween decorations can be another hurdle to avoid a home insurance claim.  As stated prior, make sure that decorations are visible and do not cause a tripping hazard.  When picking decorations avoid easily combustible decorations.  In other words, avoid things like dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper as these can easily catch fire.  For outside extension cords make sure that they are rated for outside use.  Also, remember to never staple, nail or fasten through the cord as this could cause the cord to malfunction and spark or cause a fire.
