Halloween Home Insurance

Halloween is potentially a scary time of year for your home insurance.  We normally think of scary stories and things that go bump in the night.  However, Halloween’s effect on your home insurance can be the scariest of all.

What about my property?

According to NFPA( www.nfpa.org) Halloween decorations are responsible for 840 home fires and $11.6 million in property damage for 2011-2015.  In other words, the candles and Jack-O-Lanterns you have out could cause a fire. Put out all fires before going to bed or leaving.  Also be sure to keep decorations away from flames.  Remember that alcohol can be flammable as well and lead to a fire. In addition to fire, theft and vandalism can be Halloween risk that impact your home insurance.   Halloween sees a rise in mischief.  Some of mischief can result in property damage.  Sometimes, the egging of houses or use of fire crackers can leave you to have a Halloween home insurance claim.

Can I be sued?

Similarly, your liability can be affected by a Halloween home insurance claim.  The night of Trick or Treat can be exciting for kids and adults.  This excitement can lead to kids running free in places they shouldn’t.  A slip and fall on your property can be a lawsuit.  Check walk areas and high traffic areas to make sure they are clear of tripping hazards.  In addition it is a good idea to make sure walkways are well lit.  Kids can be wearing ill fitting mask that make it difficult to see and walk.  In addition to kids and adults being excited, dogs get excited.  A dog bite can also lead to a lawsuit.  It is a good idea to keep your pets in a back area when kids are trick or treating.

Finally.

In conclusion Halloween is a fun and exciting night for kids and adults.  Halloween is also a scary time for your homeowners insurance.  Taking a little extra time to prep for safety can save you some headaches.  A lawsuit or fire will ruin anyone’s fun time.  Here is to a safe and fun Halloween.
