By October 6, 2021Insurance

Will your fall maintenance list help you avoid a home insurance claim?  Many people think of closing up the outside of their house for fall maintenance?  However, your interior is just as important.  The increase use of heating systems as well as more time indoors can lead to a home insurance claim.

What do I need to check in my home?

Your furnace is one of the major items that need attention before winter.  The furnace can save you in a couple of ways.  One if serviced regularly it can save you money by being efficient.  Servicing your HVAC unit regularly can also save you money by prolonging the life of your system.  Finally it can save you from a home insurance claim by making sure that it is safe.  It is recommended to have a licensed HVAC contractor inspect and service your unit.  The fall is the perfect time as the unit has probably been dormant since last spring.  Furthermore, if you have a fireplace or woodstove have that inspected as well.  Also have you chimney cleaned.  For the furnace and stove check to make sure that gaskets and seals are tight.  Also having a clogged chimney cleaned can prevent a fire.

Is my furnace the only way to keep my house warm?

The furnace is not the only way to help keep your home warm.  A couple of small tweaks can help keep your furnace running easy.  One item is to switch the direction of your ceiling fans.  This can create an upward draft that redistributes warm air.  Another way to help use your furnace use is proper sealing and insulation.  According to bobvila.com, proper sealing and insulation can save you up to 20% on heating and cooling cost.
