A burst water pipe can lead to big damage for your home insurance.  According to livescience.com ( https://www.livescience.com/43408-why-do-freezing-pipes-burst.html ), pipes do not burst due to ice expanding, rather they burst due to pressure inside the pipes.  When water freezes it crystalizes into a larger form as the water molecules expand when they freeze.  This pushes the water toward the closed faucet creating a tremendous amount of pressure.  Eventually, the pipe gives out and ruptures (livescience.com).  This is where your home insurance comes in.  The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety states that a claim of this nature is easily $5000 or more.

Pipes in unheated interior spaces are typically most at risk.  Basements, attics, and garages can be the main danger areas.  One thing you can do is us pipe insulation for your pipes.  However, there are simple things you can do around the house as well.  Keep your garage door closed and your kitchen and bathroom cabinets open.  This can keep cold air out of the house due to the garage.  Also, keeping cabinets open allows warm air to get to the plumbing.  You can also let cold water flow from the faucet.  This keeps the water moving and prevents it from freezing.  Finally, keep your thermostat consistent.  Dropping your thermostat when you are away from the house can give pipes the window they need to freeze.  Never set a thermostat below 55-60 degrees.
